While we are all cooped up in our homes, nature is still doing her thing and so are the local growers. This week I talked to my friends from Gardenville. This is a location with more greenhouses per block than most. And each of these greenhouses has been around for generations, with the sons and daughters now growing their parents’ and grandparents’ legacy.
For a grower, Easter signals the start of the season. But preparing for that opening day is a task akin to the opening of baseball season. It takes months to prepare. My friends have been planting, watering, fertilizing and caring for hundreds…….. no, thousands of plants.
These beautiful, living things will be ready and waiting for us when this emergency is over. The growers will hold them for us, prune them and keep them luscious as we all do our part to stop the virus.
And when that day comes, and I know it will, I encourage all of us to run to the nearest greenhouse. Breathe in the soft scents of summer, be dazzled by the shapes, textures and colors that abound.
It will help heal all of us. We will all feel like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz when she walked into the technicolor gardens of the Emerald City. Life will be in bloom and we will have our local growers to thank for some joy that will be reborn in all of us.
Be safe!
